Education


McNairy County Schools include one K-4, one 5-8, one 1-6, three K-8, one 7-12, and one 9-12. You can now visit Adamsville Elementary School at http://www.centuryinter.net/aes/home.html. All schools are accredited by the state Department of Education and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. McNairy County was the first rural system in Tennessee to have all schools accredited by the Southern Association. Total enrollment of the school district is approximately 4,200 students.

The McNairy County Board of Education has placed emphasis on curriculum development for several years. Both the elementary and secondary curricula place emphasis on promoting academic excellence. An academic awards banquet is held each year to honor students who have won in locally sponsored competitive events. Competition is provided in science, mathematics, and writing. A full range of honors and advanced placement are included along with ten different vocational courses.

Both secondary schools have excellent athletic facilities and are consistently competitive in the TSSAA classification. They both field basketball, football, baseball, and golf teams. MCHS also has girl's softball and track. There are many community sponsored athletic activities which compliment those offered in the schools.

The Tennessee Department of Education has honored McNairy County with the Governor's A+ Award for Community Commitment to Excellence in Education.

The Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Board of Education, has formed PRIME (Progressive Results in McNairy Education.) The PRIME program includes a volunteer program; Adopt-A-School program; Teacher Grant Program; Project Graduation; CAN-DO; and serves as support for the local Drug Alliance Committee. This is a county-wide program.

The Higher Education Alliance is a center of higher learning located at the Crump Area Vocational Technical School. This Center is a joint effort between Memphis State University, Jackson State Community College and the Vocational School, offering classes on the associates, bachelors, and graduate level.

The Area Vocational Technical Training School at Crump (three miles from Adamsville) offers several basic courses to area residents. An 18,000 sq. foot Center of Higher Education is located in Selmer, Tennessee (located on the highway 45 bypass) which offers courses that can be transferred to any 4-year college. The center also offers distance learning classes as well as traditional classroom instruction. In addition, there is an industry training site within the center .
